How long have you been in business?
ARLIS was established in 1997 with the consolidation of eight library collections from Alaska Department of Fish & Game, Bureau of Land Management, Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council, Fish and Wildlife Service, Minerals Management Service, National Park Service, U.S. Geological Survey and the Environment and Natural Resources Institute at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
What is your primary product or service?
ARLIS is an specialized library focusing on Alaska natural and cultural resources. As the "mother lode of Alaska resources information", ARLIS has more than 200,000 books, 700 print journals, 400 electronic journals and databases, reports, maps, videos, slides and photographs that focus on Alaska resources issues, past and present. Topics include fish and wildlife, geology, mining, oil and gas, forestry, land-use management, resource development, environmental pollution, recreation and scenic resources, cultural heritage, and circumpolar regions. The ARLIS collection contains many unique items available nowhere else. Many items are available fulltext through the library catalog at www.arlis.org.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
ARLIS is the recipient of the 2001 National Award for Museum & Library Service, presented in 2002 by First Lady Laura Bush, for innovation and excellence in service.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
ARLIS is located in the library building on the campus of the University of Alaska Anchorage.
What are your hours of operation?
The ARLIS reference desk is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m to 5 p.m. Most of the collection is also available evenings and weekends. The library catalog is available at www.arlis.org. Free parking is available. Contact the reference desk at 907-272-7547 for details.
